Sales can be an exciting and lucrative field to be in. That's why so many want to be in sales but yet to see the importance of knowing what is involved. It's important as a parent, teacher or student to make sure you enter this field with the right motives and attitude. Here are some questions you can ask your child/student if sales is right for you. Let's go!
Why do I Want to Sell? Hint: Money is not a strong motive to stand by itself, so make sure your child/student is being very honest with themselves. This is vital.
Is the product that I am selling needed? What problem does the product I am selling solve? Who needs this problem to be solved?
Do I believe in this product? I have not ever represented a product or service I did not believe in. My belief and conviction is conveyed to the person or organization that I am selling to. If I am phony, they will pick up on it very quickly. I am quite sure you have experienced this as a customer before.
Is this something that comes "easy" to me? At 16 I was part of a summer engineering program at a local university based on my guidance counselors recommendation. I went but really did not enjoy the program. Nothing came easy and I was average at best. The next summer I went downtown to a clothing store and introduced myself to the store owner. I told him how I can sell and can bring potential high school students to his store. Guess what? I was hired on the spot and it was easy for me to do!
Do I like building relationships and being around people in general? People buy from people they like. This is key when it comes to business in general, especially sales.
Do I take things personally? Rejection goes hand in hand when it comes to sales, but once you get going you simply learn to embrace it. You will get better at handling it.
This is a great way to see if the foundation is there for sales. These are some questions your child/student will ask over and over as one progresses. Once you can honestly answer these questions, then the confidence needed for sales will develop in your child and student. Let them dive right into it and have fun!!!
